Missed-call problems are invisible by nature: the worst symptoms are the calls you don't know about. Here are five diagnostic signs — plus a way to actually measure it.
1. Your voicemail rarely has messages
If your phone rings regularly but the voicemail box is nearly always empty, that doesn't mean nobody calls — it means callers hang up before the beep. Most people sent to voicemail never leave a message. An empty voicemail box next to a busy phone is the classic symptom.
2. Customers say "I couldn't get through"
When regulars mention trying to reach you and giving up, you're hearing the tip of an iceberg. For every customer who mentions it, several tried and said nothing — they just rang someone else.
3. You do "phone admin" in the evening
If your day ends with a stint of returning calls and scribbled callback lists, the phone is running you. That's demand arriving while you work — captured badly, resolved slowly, and eating the hours you don't bill.
4. Competitors with worse reviews book jobs you should get
If a competitor with an inferior reputation keeps winning local work, ask when they answer. Consistent answering beats superior skill at the enquiry stage — every time.
5. You don't know your real call volume
Quick test: can you state how many calls you missed last week? If not, you're flying blind. Even a rough week of counting (missed calls on your mobile log) is usually a shock.

- Pull your phone's missed-call log for the last two weeks — count, and note the times.
- Compare against jobs booked.
- Multiply your average job value by (missed genuine enquiries × your conversion rate).
