Phone vs chat: how different customers prefer to reach you

Agentric Team ·

Customer contact preferences split along lines that matter: age, urgency, context, and personality. A business that only takes calls — or only takes messages — silently filters out the segments that prefer the other channel.

Who calls, who chats

Callers tend to be: urgent (the boiler's dead), older demographics, people mid-task (driving home thinking "I must ring the garage"), and anyone with a complex thing to explain faster by voice.

Chatters tend to be: younger customers (a generation that grew up messaging), browsers researching rather than buying, people at work who can't talk, the phone-anxious, and anyone contacting outside hours "just to get it moving".

Neither segment is a niche — each is a large slice of real demand.

Why one brain across both

Historically the channels were separate products: a receptionist for calls, a chatbot for web. The unified approach changes the game:

  • Same knowledge — the FAQ you wrote once answers on both channels.
  • Shared memory — the customer who rang Tuesday and chats Thursday gets continuity.
  • One place to look — all conversations in one dashboard, regardless of channel.

The conversion interplay

The channels feed each other: a web chat that can't answer → books a call. A caller who prefers typing → directed to the site. A landing-page visitor who never rings → the widget catches them anyway.

The common failure mode is channel-siloing: the chat knows nothing the phone assistant knows, and neither remembers the customer. Unified memory is what turns two contact points into one relationship.

The practical implication

You don't choose phone or chat — you deploy both with the same assistant. On Agentric that's the default: the phone line answers calls, the widget and landing page answer chats, and it all converges on the same knowledge, memory and diary.
