Pricing your services so the phone keeps ringing

Agentric Team ·

Every caller's second question is "how much?" — and how your business handles pricing determines whether the enquiry converts. Here's the honest treatment of pricing strategy for a phone-answered business.

The transparency dilemma

Owners resist publishing prices: "it depends", "competitors will see", "I need to quote individually". And callers keep asking anyway — because price is the decision variable they can't proceed without.

The resolution isn't "publish everything" — it's giving the assistant something honest to say:

  • Where you can state prices: state them. £85 boiler service, £45 MOT — callers book with confidence.
  • Where it genuinely varies: honest ranges with the variable named — "full head of colour from £65 depending on hair length — the consultation confirms it."
  • Where quoting is the product: "free quotes — can I book the survey?" converts the price question into the booking that prices it.

The pricing positions that work

The transparent operator. Real prices in the FAQ, assistant quotes them consistently. Converts highest with ready buyers — no games, no surprises.

The value anchor. "We're not cheapest — we're Gas Safe, insured, guaranteed" — the assistant delivers the frame before the price.

The qualifying quote. "Every job's different — the survey's free and the quote's fixed" — moves callers to the assessment where pricing happens in person.

What kills conversion

  • "We can't say over the phone" — reads as evasive; callers assume the worst.
  • Prices inconsistent with what the assistant says — update the knowledge base when prices change.
  • Surprising surcharges discovered at booking — state them upfront.

Pricing the assistant into the story

The assistant quoting your prices consistently is a pricing system, not just information: every caller hears the same honest figure, every "how much" becomes the next step, and the pricing conversation stops depending on who's answering and whether they remembered the latest rates.

The callers who'll pay are rarely scared by honesty — they're scared by uncertainty.
