Choosing a phone number strategy: local, mobile or keep
Agentric Team ·
The number your business advertises matters more than owners think — it's a trust signal and a routing decision at once. The three strategies and when each wins.
Option 1: Keep your existing number + forward
Your advertised number stays; calls forward to the AI when you can't answer (or always, your choice).
- Pros: zero disruption — customers, Google Business, van livery all keep working. Setup in minutes.
- Cons: forwarding relies on your carrier's divert working — rare edge cases (e.g. some PAYG plans) can be fiddly.
Best for: established businesses with a number customers already know — i.e. most people.
Option 2: Provision a new local number
A fresh geographic number (01xxx/02x) provided by us, routed directly to your agent.
- Pros: clean business line separate from your personal mobile; no forwarding dependency; local presence ("they're a Leeds number" builds trust).
- Cons: a number change costs the effort of updating listings, cards, van, directories.
Best for: new businesses, separating business from personal, or adding a tracked marketing line (the AI answers it and you measure it).
Option 3: Port your number to Agentric
Move your existing number fully onto our telephony.
- Pros: one number, one system, everything in one place; porting is routine (if slow).
- Cons: porting takes days-to-weeks and requires the losing provider's cooperation.
Best for: businesses wanting maximum consolidation once they've decided to commit.
What callers actually care about
- Local numbers signal local business — an 0113 says "Leeds"; a mobile says "one-person". Both work, but geographic numbers carry quiet credibility.
- Any answered number beats any unanswered one. The number strategy matters a lot less than the answer strategy.
The recommendation
Start where you are: forward your existing number conditionally. When you want a dedicated line, provision a local number alongside. Porting is the commit-later option — do it once you've watched the AI handle real calls.
