Referral marketing for local businesses that works

Agentric Team ·

Every local business grows on referrals — but most treat them as weather: they happen or they don't. Referrals can be engineered, and the mechanics are simpler than expected.

Why referrals work (and scale)

A referred customer arrives pre-sold: someone they trust vouched for you, so trust transfers instantly. Referral customers typically convert faster, haggle less, and refer on again. The quality of channel beats the volume of channel.

How to actually generate them

Ask, specifically. "If you know anyone who needs this, send them my way" — at the moment of satisfaction, on the completed job. Not a programme, just a habit.

Make it easy to refer. The referable business is the one with a memorable name and an answerable phone. When someone tells a friend "call these guys", the friend calls — and the answering experience IS the referral's follow-through. A referred caller hitting voicemail burns the referral.

Use the landing page. "Look them up, there's a page — you can even chat to their assistant and book" is an easier referral to pass on than a phone number.

Thank referrers. A text, a thank-you, occasionally something more. Referral sources that get acknowledged refer again.

The affiliate angle (for actual incentives)

Where formal referral economics matter — partners, suppliers, happy customers who keep sending work — Agentric's own affiliate programme is worth a look: 35% recurring commission on referrals. It works the other way too: local businesses can refer each other customers systematically.

The systematic version

Referrals compound when they're a process: ask every satisfied customer, make the hand-off easy, be the business that answers when the referral lands. The referred caller gets an instantly-answered phone or a live chat — the referral machinery completes itself.
